10 Tips on Maximizing Laptop Batteries Performance

laptop battery serviceI am on the planes a decent amount of the time (100,000 miles by late May) and tend to spend a chunk of my flights using my laptop.  Most of the time it’s productive, but it can also include a DVD or the occasional game (either Nethack or Battle for Middle-Earth 2, which are obviously similar).  When I was a-hunting for a laptop, battery life was a key criterion in my selection process, as was weight.  While I like my Vaio VGN SZ-160P, the standard battery was lasting about 3 hours (the extended life clocks in under six hours before my tweaks), not enough for the SFO-JFK route (now switching to SFO-EWR as a default due to Manhattan traffic, which is a huge bummer because United’s P.S. flights have standard AC outlets on board).

So I did a lil’ Googlin’ for tips on extending battery life, and I found them all pretty, well, lacking.  Stuff like “don’t try to do real-time 3d rendering” or “fully charge up your battery before flying.” One of them even said “buy an extra battery.” Not exactly helpful (Sony’s tips are in the picture on the right).  The most common tip that I’ve found truly deceptive is on disabling wireless: many claim it makes a huge impact to disable it, but personally I’ve only noticed a minor difference.  I do in fact disable it (and Bluetooth) but on my Vaio the difference was about 10 minutes over 3 hours (but as I state below, it all adds up).

Alas, I’ve gone and done a lot of experimenting and have a list of my tips to really maximize battery life for my laptop.

Key to this process is having some good methodology.  While testing, I kept a plain text file on my Desktop (creatively called “battery.txt”) tracking the real clock as well as Windows’ expected battery life.  The problem with the Windows tool, is it really just tells you the current state of the battery based on the current system activity.  This means if you start with 3 hours remaining then spend 30 minutes doing something that rapidly consumes the battery, you’ll be down to 2 or less.  In other words, you need to track the actual history/lifespan of your battery if you want to get the best information out of your system.   You can check out my little tracking file for inspiration.

And now, with no more delay, here’s Tips for Maximizing Your Notebook Battery, or How to Fly From San Francisco to New York City With an Average Battery and Not Have to Watch an Ernest Goes to Anywhere Movie):

1. Brightness: how low can you go? Without any question, the fastest way to suck the life out of a battery is leaving your brightness high.  Turn it down as low as you possibly can without needing to up your glasses prescription.  On my Vaio, I can select from one of 8 levels.  During one test, at brightness level 3 my system reported 60% full, with 3:52 (all times are hours:minutes) of life to go.  I switched up to level 5 and in 17 minutes of use, I was down to 52% full, with 3:06 to go.  In other words, 17 minutes used 46 minutes worth of Toshiba pa3534u-1brs laptop battery (all other variables were held constant).  You can even be so bold as to lower your brightness all the way down when sitting idle for a minute or two (for example, if you are writing a long blog post and pause to clarify your thoughts before typing).

2. Don’t use any external devices. USB and PC-Cards (aka PC-MCIA) use your battery to function, even when you aren’t using them!  Have an EVDO card or maybe a USB mouse?  Remove them if you can.  Even a memory card reader in your PC-MCIA slot uses power just by being in there.  The effect varies based on the type of device, but even a few minutes here and there (as you’ll see) add up significantly.

3. Single-task, not multi-task. The more you are doing at the same time with your PC, the more memory and CPU usage increases.  Both of which directly use up battery.  Close any applications you aren’t using, even the small ones.  When doing some experimentation, I found it more efficient to run a single application at a time, then close it and open a new one when ready to move on.  While your hard drive uses the Dell latitude d620 laptop battery too, if you are doing anything ‘productive’ you are probably hitting the drive on a regular (even if infrequent) basis anyway.

4. Keep it cool. You can take a page out of the extreme gamer’s handbooks, and have your system perform more optimally by keeping it cool.  Make sure your air vents (inflow and outflow) aren’t blocked by anything, which often occurs by poorly positioning your notebook on your lap (which is known to have some other side-effects too, by the way).  Heavy CPU and memory use all contribute to heat as well, hence my comment on multi-tasking above.

5. Shut down unused services. MSN Messenger, Google Desktop Search, QuickTime, wireless managers, etc.  They’ve all gotta go.  You probably aren’t going to use them, and they all eat up valuable resources.  Especially things that ‘scan’ anything.  For advanced users, I also recommend launching Windows Task Manager and getting rid of anything not used in-flight.  In fact, I put together another little text file with a list of all the services I don’t use, and I go down the list and manually shut down each one.  If you really want to get this one right, a little bit of research is in order.  While online, I launched the task manager (control-shift-escape) and for each service that has my User Name, I googled it.  There are a few good web sites out there which chronicle what all these mysterious services do, and you should be able to figure out which you need, and which you don’t.  Important warning: if you aren’t comfortable with this lingo, you should skip this step, or get some techie friend to help you out.  Less important warning: you may end up in a situation where you need to do a reboot after you get to your destination.

6. Do Hibernate, Do Not Suspend. I’ve found that my Vaio tends to use way too much battery when in suspend mode.  Not sure why, but the ‘instant-on’ effect isn’t worth the extra 30-60 seconds it takes to get out of hibernation.  Furthermore, the minor hit to the hard drive is unlikely to have a significant impact to your overall battery time.  Also, if you weren’t aware, going in and out of hibernate is much better than a full startup/shutdown sequence.  Note that you might need to manually enable Hibernate as a system option (once you have, the quick shortcut into it is ‘windows button’ followed by U followed by H, and some PCs will have even faster shortcuts available as well).  If you make a run to the bathroom, however, that’s worth a quick Standby, but anything over 10 minutes and I’d Hibernate instead.

7. Tweak advanced settings. Virtually all laptops manufactured in the past 24 months have some advanced power options.  Mine, for example, allows me to go into 16-bit color mode, force the CPU into a power-saving mode, disable my LAN port, and more.  This might seem obvious, but if you aren’t doing it already, go find these settings (probably in the control panel, or possibly through custom software provided by your laptop batteries manufacturer) and get aggressive with them!   If you don’t have any extra control, one good extra tip is to manually force your screen into lower color modes, as they use less CPU overall and can make a huge difference in the long run.  While you are at it, you might want to change your Alarms settings, as many laptops default to shutting down with as much as 10% of your battery still available (my Low Battery is just an alert at 5%, and my Critical is force hibernate at 1%).

8. Choose Wisely. Good: Word, Excel, Outlook, Text Editors.  Bad: anything by Adobe (you think Microsoft has bloatware, have you noticed how long even Acrobat takes to launch these days???), all Google plugins, many ‘Widgets’, ‘Gadgets’, etc.  All I can say is pick your battles wisely.  50 minutes of a video game ate up over 2 hours of my battery time, whereas writing email or documents tend to use up less than what Windows predicts (about 105% of the estimate on average).  I’ve also found WinDVD is right on the money for battery consumption, and Windows Media Player is a little power-hungry (by the way, if you are using your laptop to play music make certain you disable visualizations).  On that note, don’t use your laptop to play music unless absolutely necessary, it’s a real resource killer.

9. Watch That Hard Drive. I just wrote, don’t play music, but the reason is mostly about your drive.  The more it spins, the more power it takes.  Make sure you’ve set your basic power option to turn off your drive relatively fast, but not necessarily too fast.  Some drives use more power getting started than staying running for short periods of time.  I set my Vaio to turn off the disk after 3 minutes of inactivity, you may want more, you may want less.  At the end of the day, if you are doing anything that prevents the hard drive from spinning down ever, you are draining your HP 2230s laptop battery more than needed.

10. Like a Boy Scout, Be Prepared. I make a point of configuring my ‘flight mode’ prior to getting on the plane.  It may only take 5-10 minutes to get your system setup properly, but that just eats into your battery life if you wait to do it on the plane.  Once done with all the settings, the last thing I do before unplugging my power supply is hibernating the PC.

I hope some of these tips help you out.  Personally, I add around 30 minutes (or more) to the longevity of my standard battery (3:30 on average now), and almost an hour on the extended one (6:30 or so).  This gives me almost 10 hours of combined life (4 full DVDs guaranteed), which suits me quite well.

How to Repair Toshiba Laptop Battery Board

Toshiba Laptop Battery Board Repair Instructions

laptop battery serviceLike many consumer electronics devices, the battery in your Toshiba laptop uses a small circuit board known as a battery board to operate. If you've been having problems with your battery, it is most likely the result of a bad battery cell connection to the battery board. This problem can be fixed by opening up the battery itself.

Instructions

1. Unplug your Toshiba laptop battery from the bottom of your Toshiba laptop and place it on a sturdy work surface.

2. Insert the tip of your screwdriver in the seam where the top half of the battery meets the bottom half. Work your way around the sides of the Dell latitude d630 battery until the top half pops off. Set the top half aside.

3. Locate the cylindrical battery cells in the bottom half of the Toshiba pa3536u-1brs battery housing and lift them out of the housing. Notice the cell wires that connect to the green motherboard on the side of the battery housing.

4. Check for any wires that half broken off their connectors on the top of the battery board. Plug in your soldering iron and let it warm up.

5. Solder the ends of the cell wires to the ports on the top of the HP 484170-001 battery board and wait a few moments for the solder to dry.

6. Run hobby glue along the top of the housing and then fit the top half of the housing over the bottom. Wait a few moments for the glue to dry.

Way to sell your old iPhone before upgrading to the iPhone 4S

So you’re getting an iPhone 4S, you’ve chosen the carrier and decided on the storage size, and now you need to figure out the ins and outs of how to sell your old iPhone (or other smartphone) before upgrading? If you don’t want to keep it around as a spare, or as an iPod touch, or hand it down to a family member or friend — if you’re looking to get some cash back — then there are a few things you can do, and a few things you need to know before getting started.

Today we’re going to show you how to cash out the old and bring in the new using a number of great services!

Getting more for your old iPhone

Before you sell your old iPhone, there are a few things you can do to make sure you get the best selling price possible.

  1. Jailbreak/Unlock: The iPhone usually sells for more money when it’s jailbroken and especially unlocked, meaning you have the additional options of running restricted apps through Cydia or getting service on another carrier (like T-Mobile in the US, or any international GSM carrier). If you are new to jailbreaking we suggest checking out the jailbreak forums for the best resources.

  2. Condition: It kind of goes without saying that you’ll get more money if your device is in better condition, but this counts even more when it comes to the iPhone. If your device is in excellent shape, you’re going to be able to ask for a higher amount. For example, an iPhone 3GS in ‘fair’ condition with wear and tear can get you around $230 while a 3GS in ‘perfect’ cosmetic condition can get you as much as $300. I’ve seen a wide range of pricing on the iPhone 4 and 3GS based on condition, so make sure you research prices and price competitively. (And giving it a good, careful cleaning before you take any photos or send it off is always a good idea.)

  3. Wipe your data: Before you end up selling your old iPhone, we highly suggest you run a full data wipe on your device to make sure none of your data is available to the lucky new owner. We’ve done a quick How-To post to help you with the process.

Putting your iPhone up for sale

Now that we’re passed the basics and you’re ready to put your iPhone up for sale, it’s important to weigh all the options you have before making a decision on which service to use.

There are a ton of great online services out there to help you sell your old iPhone and we won’t be able to go through them all, so we’ve filtered down the list of services for you. We’ll start with the most familiar of them all…

Top-shoppingmall.com

Selling your iPhone on top-shoppingmall is a pretty simple process. If you’ve ever used eBay for selling things in the past then you know the selling process isn’t all that tricky, however there are still some things to keep in mind when using eBay to sell your iPhone. For instance, batteryfast charges fees for each auction based on the item you’re selling and how much it sells for, among other things, so here are five quick tips to help you get the most out of your auction:

  1. Only ship to the buyer’s confirmed Paypal address if using Paypal.

  2. Price competitively if using Buy It Now as an option.

  3. Make sure the pictures you use follow your description and are good quality — post pictures of any physical blemishes on the iPhone and be up-front in your description.

  4. Use a fast shipping service and make sure you include that in your item description.

  5. Use keywords in your title and in your item description to attract more potential buyers.

You may also want to consider insuring your item in case anything goes wrong during shipping. Watch out for low-feedback buyers and also keep in mind that Paypal charges processing fees as well.

Craigslist

Selling on craigslist is locally based, so you’ll be making a face-to-face exchange with someone in your area. I’ve used Craigslist to sell a number of things around the house, and always follow a few basic rules:

  • Don’t ever put your personal or home address in an ad. Ever!

  • I’m usually fine with putting my personal phone number in an ad, but that’s up to you. Some find it easier to text rather than email.

  • Meet in a public place, preferably in the daytime.

  • Watch out for email scams, something Craigslist is notorious for.

It’s always a good idea to use caution when dealing with Craigslist. I’ve heard some pretty crazy stories of people getting robbed or worse when meeting with people for a transaction, so bring a friend and meet in an open, public area to avoid those types of situations.

Gazelle

Gazelle offers a service that lets you easily turn most consumer electronic devices into cash. Simply send in your iPhone and Gazelle will send you money after confirming the item condition. The first thing you’ll need to do is tell Gazelle what you’re selling and what condition the item is in. You can choose from poor, fair, good or excellent condition, and it’s important to be honest when rating the condition so there’s no hiccups or snags along the way. It also helps if you have the box and original documentation and cables with your item, and the service will check for any water damages before giving you a quote.

An average-conditioned 16gb iPhone 4 will currently grab you about $215 where a perfect-conditioned iPhone 4 will get you as much as $250. The process takes about a week, and although you’re not getting as much money in the end it’s a great service if you don’t want to deal with a lot of hassle. You can have your payment delivered through Paypal among other methods, and you can also submit multiple items if you’re looking to get rid of a few more things while you’re at it.

SellYourMac.com

SellYourMac.com offers a similar service to Gazelle by letting you send in your old iPhone for payment with little to no hassle involved. In a nutshell, they’ll buy your old Mac or iOS device. You’re required to provide pictures along with a serial number next to your item description and condition. Once SellYourMac.com receives your iPhone they clean it, inspect it and verify that it’s in working condition before they turn around and sell it on eBay. Users can receive payment via Paypal and SellYourMac.com even says they give higher quotes than competing services like Gazelle, so you’ll definitely want to compare before making any final decisions.

Apple Recycle Program

If selling your old iPhone on any of the services mentioned above doesn’t sound appealing, Apple has set up a new iPod and Mobile Phone Recycling Program. As of this writing, Apple will give up to $200 for your used perfect-conditioned 32GB White iPhone 4 in the form of an Apple Gift card, which you can then turn around and use to purchase the iPhone 4S. In this case, you’re basically getting the iPhone 4S at no charge (with a 2-year contract, of course). If you have a black model, they’ll give you up to $180.

Apple is even including the iPhone 3GS in the Recycle Program, giving a $105 gift card if your 3GS is in perfect condition. They also offer to give you a new 8GB model of the same iPhone to swap out provided you sign a 2-year contract.

Personal transactions

Just because all these online services are available, it doesn’t mean you can’t still sell your old iPhone the old fashioned way — person to person, likely to a friend or acquaintance. Just be sure to follow all the tips suggested above, and remember that accessories like Square can even let you take credit cards right on your own device now, if cash isn’t as convenient.

Bonus tip

Include all packaging, cables and adapters if possible. If you have any extra cases or accessories you want to throw in the deal it can usually net you a higher selling price as a bundle instead of trying to sell them individually.

Learn How to Replace Your HP Laptop Battery here

Replace a HP Notebook Battery post by  batterylaptoppower.com

Batteries are some of the top wear items for your HP laptop computer. Your laptop’s battery is what powers your computer when it is not plugged directly into a power source. Laptop batteries will eventually begin to lose their ability to hold a charge over time.

When you notice that your laptop battery is holding a charge for progressively less time, it tells you that it needs to be replaced. With a few simple materials and several easy to follow instructions, you will be able to change your HP computer battery on your own.

Removing the old battery

1 . Power down your HP laptop and make sure it is unplugged from the wall.

2 . Turn the laptop over, so it’s bottom is facing you, and locate the chamber that holds the battery. The battery chamber will usually be marked with a standard battery symbol. If you are having trouble locating the battery chamber, open your instructions manual and find the location of your battery.

3 . Your battery will either have a latch you must open with your fingers, or several small screws which hold it in place. Use your screwdriver to unscrew the case, or open it with your hands. Once the chamber is open, remove the old battery and set it aside.

Inserting your new battery

1. Remove your new battery from it’s packaging.

2. Examine your laptop, and note the location of the power contacts. Make sure your new battery is aligned properly, and insert it into your HP laptop.

3. Replace your battery case and plug your laptop in to the wall. Allow your new battery to charge for four to six hours before use.

Tips & Warnings

  • In order to preserve hp 484170-001 battery battery life, make sure your laptop is kept at a room temperature environment at all times. Exposure to intense heat and cold will shorten your battery’s lifespan and require more frequent battery replacements.

  • When purchasing your new battery, make sure to note the voltage requirements for your PC. If your computer’s battery is underpowered, it could have adverse affects, such as your computer randomly turning off and decreased battery life.

7 Must-Haves Features for The Next iPod Touch - wholesaleeshop.com.au

If the latest Apple rumor is true, a new iPod Touch should arrive in September. U.K. retailer John Lewis says we can expect an iPhone 4-inspired device with a front-facing camera, video chat, and a gyroscope.

All good stuff, certainly. But like most rumors, the U.K. report is short on specifics. So why not fill in the blanks with a personal wish list for the next-gen iPod Touch? Here are some features I’d like to see:

1) A really good camera. The new iPod touch will feature a 5-megapixel, front-facing camera with a flash, according to John Lewis. That sure sounds a lot like the iPhone 4′s rear-facing camera (5MP, LED sensor, 720p HD video at 30 frames per second). If true, that’s great news. A more likely scenario, however, is that the touch adds a VGA-quality (640-by-480 pixel) camera like the iPhone 4′s second front-facing cam. Another question: Will the iPod Touch be able to shoot videos and photos, or only videos like the iPod Nano?

2) Video chat with non-Apple users. Face it, as long as FaceTime video chat is limited to the Apple faithful–as is the case today–it’ll never rise above novelty status. Steve Jobs has vowed to make FaceTime an open industry standard, but that development could take an eternity (or longer) as standards bodies and tech’s major players like Google and Microsoft mull their options. And unfortunately Skype for iPhone, which runs on the iPod touch, doesn’t support video calls.

3) Retina display: Apple, bring the iPhone 4′s glorious 960-by-640-pixel screen to the iPod Touch. Assuming the Touch adds FaceTime, as well as gyroscope for more advanced gaming, Apple’s critically-lauded “retina display” would be a nice match.

4) Faster Wi-Fi: Today’s iPod Touch supports 802.11b/g wireless, but not the newer 802.11n spec. According to Samsung, 802.11n Wi-Fi throughput on mobile devices could reach up to 35M bps (bits per second). The iPhone 4 supports 802.11n, as do a growing number of laptops and smartphones. It’s the Touch’s turn.

5) Built-in microphone: If the iPod Touch adds a video camera, an integrated mic would be essential. Currently, the earphones that ship with the 32GB and 64GB models have a mic and a remote. If the Touch adds a video cam, an earphone-based mic won’t cut it.

6) Longer battery life: Apple managed to squeeze a larger battery into the iPhone 4, an upgrade that could mean up to 10 hours of Internet use on a Wi-Fi network. The power-hungry iPod touch could use the extra staying power as well.

7) 3G option with iPad-style data plan: I know, I know–this isn’t going to happen. A 3G-enabled iPod Touch would encroach too far into iPhone 4 territory. Still, a 3G Touch with an AT&T data plan–200MB for $15/month, or 2GB for $25/month–is high on my wish list. Perhaps when pigs fly.

A blog (a portmanteau of the term “web log“) is a type of website or part of a website. Top 31 Free Blogging Websites

For anyone interested in blogging, it can be hard to find the one that works for you. You want to go where people can read your blog or maybe you want it where only your family or friends can read it. It took me some time, but I complied what I believe to be the list of the best. If anyone sees one I missed, please feel free to add the blog in your comment, that way you can help me make this the ultimate list of the best blogs.

  1. WordPress (http://wordpress.com) this one is number one for one main reason, it does not have ads on your blog. You can set up your layout, color scheme, theme and everything just the way you want it. Not only can you install WordPress on your own sites, you can use the same software on their site and save yourself all of the technical work. You do not have to install anything, but you can if you choose to.

  2. Blogger/BlogSpot (http://blogger.com) This one is one of most commonly used blogs, linking to others is quite easy and updating it is very user-friendly. You also have the option of deleting comments, which is nice for those who don’t want people advertising on their blogs.

  3. LiveJournal (http://livejournal.com) Not only is this a great blog, but it a great tool for writers. There are hundreds of groups set up designed to let you join a writing challenge. For anyone who is looking to have their skills as a writer tested, this is the place for you. Customizable theme, avatars, layouts and a few more things you can get if you want to pay for them, but I did that a few years back, not really worth the money.

  4. Vox (http://vox.com) A personal blogging service where people share thoughts, photos, videos with friends and family

  5. BlogSome (blogsome.com) BlogSome is the fastest growing blog host in the world (in percentage terms) Was voted Forbes Best of The Web pick. Based out of Ireland, this site uses the WordPress MU platform, large choice of themes.

  6. Xanga (www.xanga.com)  This is more community-centric blogging, including Friends lists.

  7. MySpace (www.myspace.com) this is more community-centric blogging, but you get all sorts of layout and backgrounds to play with. There are so many websites dedicated to making backgrounds and goodies for MySpace it is not funny.

  8. Facebook: (www.facebook.com) On Facebook, you can have “Notes” which are viewed by your friends. If you want only friends and family to see this, you have the option on Facebook.

  9. Insane Journal (InsaneJournal.com) – Another site based on the same software that runs LiveJournal, offers free and paid accounts, paid benefits are only enhancements.

  10. Journal Fen (JournalFen.net) – Runs on the same platform as LiveJournal platform, very much directed towards various topics and is meant for users 18 and older.

  11. BlogABond (Blogabond.com) – A site dedicated to travel blogs with map integration and more.

  12. Blog Cheese (BlogCheese.com) – A video blogging website. Nothing to do with cheese.

  13. Busy Thumbs (BusyThumbs.com)- A blog site specifically for your text messages and camera phone images.

  14. FreeVlog (Freevlog) – Designed for video blogging and completely free.

  15. Trippert (Trippert.com) – Create and share blogs of your travels.

  16. Word Count Journal (http://www.wordcountjournal.com) – A new blogging format that is also part challenge. Write one word on the first day, two words on the second day and so on, at the end of the year you’ll have written 66,795 words. I have five novels going on here and one more book on religion. This makes writing fun, it also counts your words for you so you don’t write too many.

  17. Blogetery (Blogetery.com) – Offers multiple templates, anti-spam, free sub-domain and more. You can also get paid to write there, your profit there is 90%, which is higher than most paid to write blogs. I am a member here and highly recommend it.

  18. EduBlogs (Edublogs.com) – WordPress powered blogging for educators and students alike.

  19. Blog (Blog.com) – Offers free blog hosting with unlimited bandwidth for their free package, more benefits for paid members.

  20. Blogr (Blogr.com) – Allows you to blog, host photos & videos, and podcasts.

  21. Blogster (Blogster.com) – Offers free image hosting in addition to free blogs.

  22. Bravenet (Bravenet.com) – Free blog hosting with RSS feeds and more.

  23. ClearBlogs (ClearBlogs.com) – Free blog hosting and offers templates, friends only posts, IP-Banning and more.

  24. Multiply (Multiply.com) – Mixes blogging and social networking, with photo galleries and more. There are rumors that this one is about to close, but I have no way of knowing if it is true or not. There is nothing on the website about it closing though.

  25. Netcipia (Netcipia.com) – Free blog and wiki for private or public display with 2GB of storage. This one offers revenue as well, check it out for more information.

  26. Open Diary (Open Diary.com) – Offers unlimited storage and posts, low cost subscription rates for advanced features.

  29. Tumblr (Tumblr.com) – A blog platform with a focus on allowing media-rich posts.

  30. Weebly (Weebly.com) – Allows you to create a site and blog, free hosting and change designs on the fly.
