Powertop was developed a few years ago to help profile systems and see what could be done to make Linux better at power savings. It was aimed primarily at laptops, as many folks would install Linux on a laptop and then find out that battery performance was far worse under Linux than Windows.
You don’t even need to run Powertop to benefit from it. Some of the most common power-gulping culprits are listed on the LessWatts.org website. Many of these have been fixed in the upstream projects that caused unnecessary wakeups (like ntp waking up every second, or Pidgin checking every 5 seconds to check on idle time). Something as simple as a blinking cursor can cause a wake up every few seconds, and additional power consumption.
But you might want to get a look at what’s going on under your system’s hood specifically. Powertop should be packaged for all major Linux distros, though it might not be installed by default. After installing Powertop, start it up as root (or using sudo) by running powertop. Now you’ll see an output that’s very similar to top but showing the top causes for wakeups. It also displays the ACPI estimate for power usage; at the bottom of the output, it will show suggestions (if any) to improve power performance — or it will notify you of processes preventing the disk from going into powersave mode.

Some of the problems uncovered by Powertop are going to be beyond your control. While Powertop gives several tips that you can follow, like tuning the kernel to reduce wakeups, sometimes it just reports that an application is doing something silly. However, unless you are going to re-write the application yourself, not much can be done about it. You can file a bug though, assuming it’s egregious yet sane enough to fix.
But Powertop will also provide suggestions on how to tune the kernel or make other changes that will provide better power performance. For example, Powertop suggests increasing the timer for writing to disk to decrease the number of wakeups.

You might not get mad power gains from using Powertop, but you can get some useful tips and see what it is that keeps the kernel going even when you’re not doing anything on the computer. It’s also an interesting look at what’s going on behind the scenes, in terms of which applications are writing to disk and when (and to what files). In using Powertop over a period of time, I found that (as expected) USB devices are one of my top sources for power consumption, as well as Firefox — even when it’s just sitting in the background doing nothing. This information comes in handy at various times. For example, if you’re at a conference and trying to conserve battery power, you might want to not have Firefox running all the time.
Spend a few hours with Powertop and you’ll learn much more about what goes on behind the scenes. You might even be able to boost your battery life and be a little greener to boot!

With touch tablets, notably the iPad, taking the world by storm, Acer last month decided to unveil the dual screen Iconia notebook, which can only be described as a tablet and laptop hybrid. Obviously the Iconia’s most notable attribute is its two touch screens, both of which have 14 inch screen diagonals, HD 1366 x 768 resolutions and of course multi-touch capabilities. They’re even covered in gorilla glass to prevent scratches and make fingerprints easier to clean.
Virtual keyboard
As you can see from the photo below, just like a tablet, the Iconia does not have an actual physical keyboard, with the second touch screen doubling as the keypad. Though some might miss the feeling of actual keys whilst typing, the full sized QWERTY virtual keyboard does have a lot of benefits. For example, it can switch between different language keyboards on the fly, it offers predictive text for faster typing, and you can also instantly change it to handwriting mode for jotting down notes.
Impressive specs
Whilst the dual touch screen displays might garner the most attention, the other big feature with the Iconia is its performance specs, which are decidedly laptop like. In contrast to your average tablet, which typically sports a measly 1GHz CPU, the Acer laptop runs off the new Intel Core i5 processor. This CPU is in turn backed up by 4GB of RAM and a whopping 750GB hard drive (much more storage than either the iPad or Galaxy Tab). To top it off, the Iconia’s other specs aren’t too bad either and include an actual HDMI port, USB, WiFi and optional 3G.

With the Acer Iconia as a touch driven device, the first question that comes to our minds is what OS will the touch laptop be running? Unfortunately, the answer is Windows 7. We say unfortunately, because Windows 7, despite being touch compatible, has yet to prove itself as a viable touch OS.
Decent apps?
Acer claim the Iconia will ship with a wealth of onboard touch-based apps, such as Acer’s own TouchPhoto, TouchMusic, as well as SocialJogger (lets you check Facebook, Flickr and YouTube), MyJournal and Scrapbook. These all look promising, but in our opinion Windows 7 is still way far behind iOS4 and Android when it comes to tablet optimised apps. Moreover, whilst some have criticised Android as not being optimised for tablets, we have know doubt that it eventually will be, whereas the same can definitely not be said for Windows 7.

Will consumers wait? – Apple iPad 2 reportedly by February

According to DigiTimes, Foxconn has been told to ship the iPad 2 in the next 100 days with initial shipments of 400,000 to 600,000 units.
These sources point to a February shipment of Apple’s next-gen iPad.

The timing of this story is problematic to some degree. If the report is true—there are no guarantees of that—Apple is planning to launch a new improved iPad just two months after the Christmas selling season.

Will consumers hold out for the next iPad? And will consumers who just got an iPad chafe at a launch of the iPad 2 so soon after the holidays?

I’ve mentioned the iPad 2 to a few Apple fans and the reaction was mixed. Some folks said that Apple Battery wouldn’t launch a next-gen iPad so soon. More likely, Apple would announce the iPad 2 in February with shipments in March or April.

The other risk with all of this iPad 2 talk is that consumers will wait on current iPad orders. There is ample supply of iPads in stores. Apple clearly wants to move these units out of the way.
