10 tips to cut the risk of hard-drive crashes

Storage may be relatively cheap these days, but there’s a lot more than just money at stake when a hard drive containing valuable data crashes. A few simple precautions can make that sort of disaster less likely, says Jack Wallen.



Hardware costs have dropped considerably over the past decade, but those price falls don’t mean we shouldn’t take care of our kit — and that is especially true for hard drives. Storage is a precious commodity because it holds the data that employees use to do their jobs.



Of course, all drives fail eventually but a few simple steps can prevent their premature demise. Here are my 10 suggestions for prolonging storage life.

1. Run chkdsk

All hard disks eventually contain errors. These errors can include physical problems, software issues and partition-table issues. The Windows chkdsk program will attempt to handle any problems, such as bad sectors, lost clusters, cross-linked files and directory errors. Such errors can quickly lead to an unbootable drive, which will lead to downtime for the end user.



The best way I have found to take advantage of chkdsk is to have it run at the next boot with the command:

chkdsk X: /f

where X is the drive you want to check. This command will inform you that the disk is locked and will ask you if you want to run chkdsk the next time the system restarts. Select Y to allow this action.

2. Add a monitor

Plenty of applications are available to monitor the health of your drives, offering a host of features. One of the best choices is the Acronis Drive Monitor, a free tool that will monitor everything from hard-drive temperature to the percentage of free space available. Acronis Drive Monitor can be set up to send out email alerts if something is amiss on the drive being monitored. Getting these alerts is a simple way to take the initiative in the fight against drive failure.

3. Separate operating system install from user data

With the Linux operating system, I almost always put the user’s home directories and the operating system installation on separate drives. This measure ensures the drive containing the operating system undergoes less reading and writing and that much of the I/O will happen on the user’s home drive. It is a precaution that will extend the life of the operating system’s drive, as well as allowing you to transfer the user data easily should the operating system drive fail.

4. Be careful about the surrounding environment

This point may seem obvious but every day I see PCs stuck in tiny cabinets with zero air circulation. Those machines always run hot, which will shorten the lifespan of the internal components. So instead of locating machines in tight, unventilated spaces, give them plenty of breathing room.



If you must cram a machine into a tight space, at least give it ventilation and even add a fan to pull out the stale, warm air generated by the PC. There’s a reason why so much time and money have gone into PC cooling and why we have technologies such as liquid cooling in datacentres.

5. Watch out for static

This is another obvious point for those with some experience, but it’s worth repeating that static electricity is the enemy of computer components. When you handle them, make sure you ground yourself first. This precaution is especially true in the winter months or in areas of drier air. If you seem to pick up static shocks almost every time you touch something, that’s a sign that you should use extra caution when handling drives.



You should also be careful about where you set down drives. I have witnessed users placing drives on stereo speakers, TVs and other appliances or devices that can give off an electromagnetic wave. Most of these appliances have magnets that are not strong enough to erase a drive — but you still shouldn’t risk it.

6. Defragment that drive

A fragmented drive has to work harder than it should. All hard drives should be used in their most efficient states to avoid excess wear and tear. To be on the safe side…… set your PC or PCs to defrag automatically every week. This measure extends the life of your drive by keeping the file structure compact, so the read heads are not moving as much or as often.

7. Use a solid-state drive

Solid-state drives are, for all intents and purposes, just large flash drives, so they have no moving parts. Without moving parts, the life of the drive as a whole is naturally going to be longer than it would if the drive included read heads, platters and bearings. Although these drives cost more, they will save you money in the long run by offering a longer lifespan, which means less likelihood of drive failure causing downtime as data is recovered and transferred.

8. Take advantage of power save

On nearly every operating system, you can configure your hard drive to spin down after a given time. In some older iterations of operating systems, drives would spin 24/7 — which would drastically reduce their life. By default, Windows 7 uses the Balanced Power Savings plan, which will turn off the hard drive after 20 minutes of inactivity. Even if you change that by a few minutes, you are adding life to your hard drive.



Just make sure you don’t reduce that number to the point where your drive is going to sleep frequently throughout the day. If you are prone to taking five- to 10-minute breaks, consider lowering that time to no less than 15 minutes. When the drive goes to sleep, the drive is not spinning. So such a change could have a significant bearing on the drive’s lifespan.

9. Tighten those screws

Loose mounting screws that secure the hard drive to the PC chassis can cause excessive vibrations. Those vibrations can damage the platters of a standard hard disk. If you hear vibrations coming from inside your PC, it needs checking to ensure the screws securing the drive to the mounting platform are tight.

10. Back up

Eventually, drives will fail. No matter how careful you are, no matter how many steps you take to prevent failure, the drive will — in the end — die. If you have solid backups, at least the transition from one drive to another will be painless. And by using a backup tool such as Acronis Universal Restore, you can transfer a machine image from one piece of hardware to another with little difficulty.

My beloved Apple iPad just heard the news: Apple’s holding a special event on March 2. The invite doesn’t say “New iPad”, but the imagery is clear: a calendar page is peeling back to reveal an iPad. What else could it be but the second generation iPad? It’ll be different than the iPad I own, ostensibly better. This is what worries my iPad. It assumes, and I’m not sure I can argue with it, that I’ll race to replace yesterday’s model with the latest, and possibly greatest, tablet on the market.



Don’t get me wrong, my iPad has been plenty good to me. I travel with it and use it for e-mail, web browsing, movie watching, music and audio-book playing, directions, astronomy, Angry Bird throwing, race car driving, newspaper reading, controlling my DVR, and drawing. In fact, I probably spend more time drawing on the iPad than I do anything else. No question about it, the Apple iPad is currently my favorite device. So why would I give it up?



No, I wouldn’t give it up for one of the competitive tablets from Toshiba, Motorola, Samsung, HP, or even RIM. I like what I see in these Tabs, Xooms, TouchPads and Playbooks, but these are relatively new and untested (in some cases unreleased) products. Plus, there’s no guarantee that they’ll feature my favorite apps. With enough time and success, I’m sure they will, but if I can make the transition from iPad V1 to iPad V2 without losing my apps, photos, music, movies, contacts, and drawings, then I see little reason to switch. Still, this doesn’t answer why I’d consider the iPad 2.



First let’s consider what Apple might introduce in the second-generation iPad. Before I begin, allow me to turn off my current iPad. I don’t want it watching and getting any more distressed than it already is.



Resolution:



It’s a lock that Apple will take the 1024×768 resolution up a few notches and possibly add the Retina Display to its tablet device. First introduced on the iPhone 4 last year, this high-resolution battery technology takes the display where no display has gone before, beyond the limits of human visual perception—at least that’s what Apple tells us. The reality is that it makes even the densest Web site a breeze to read on the iPhone 4 screen. Imagine what it will do to the iPad’s more generous screen real estate.



Camera[s]:



When I met with HP earlier this month to get up-close and personal with the new TouchPad (it took all night to convince my iPad that me and the TouchPad are, for now, just friends), HP said they only put one front-facing camera on the device because they could not imagine anyone holding up their 9.7-inch device and filming with it. I cannot tell you how many times I wished my iPad had cameras on the front and back. Of course I’d be happy to hold it up and film with it. I fully expect Apple to put cameras on both sides of the iPad 2.



Faster:



Apple doesn’t talk very much about the raw power behind its home-grown A4 chip, but I’m sure Apple wants to crank it up a bit. In fact, with a much higher-screen resolutions, I don’t think Apple has any choice. All the subsystem specs should go up. In fact, I would not be surprised if Apple drops the lower storage option (16 GB) on the iPad 2 and adds a new higher-end one: 128 GB.



Thinner:



If you haven’t spent any time with the 4th generation iPod touch, then you’re missing out. It is impossibly thin and powerful, plus it has a Retina Display and two cameras, which simply proves that Apple can squeeze a whole lot into a very tiny package. The iPad 2′s screen should be no smaller than the first generation one, but I do expect it to get a lot thinner—yet still be super sturdy.



More Stable OS:



Here’s a dirty little secret about the iPad: It does crash. Okay, not so much the iPad, but the apps that run on it. I think Apple will introduce an updated OS to better navigate app faults and more gracefully handle crash-prone apps. The latest OS will also support 20(!) fingers of touch and add more nuance to the multitasking support so you can see what’s going on under each of those app icons.



Better Gaming:



The iPad is already a great gaming device, but I predict that Apple will show some interesting Apple TV related technology where the iPad becomes a control pad for an HDTV-based game.



Each and every one of these changes makes the iPad 2 hard to resist. Higher resolution means my drawings will become more detailed and the output will be that much better, even at printout sizes larges than 8×10 inches. Two cameras means I can take photos to share or use with my art and start using FaceTime and Skype immediately. A faster processor means an end to some of the lag I see in drawing and gaming. A thinner iPad will encourage me to carry it around all the time. Right now, I still have to choose between my laptop and the iPad (sorry, but I still can’t get all my work done on the iPad).



I admit it, I’m guessing here. Apple could introduce a minor iPad upgrade, but I really don’t expect that. It’s not the Apple way—lately they tend to go big or go home. If some or all of these things happen, and Apple doesn’t raise the price of the iPad 2, then it’ll be hard for me to resist upgrading, but to upgrade, I’d have to sell or trade in (will Apple offer this?) my current iPad. This will not sit well with the device that’s my nightly couch companion. I worry about what the aluminum and glass device might do. Tell you what, let’s keep this little conversation between us and if my iPad asks, tell it we were talking about the Mets chances in 2011.

A cordless drill serves many functions. It can be used to make minor fixes and repairs around the house and can also be used on a construction site. Several manufacturers make different brands and models of cordless drills, all with different specifications, speeds and features. However, the battery packs used in the various cordless drills all remain the same. The drill battery packs contain either Ni-Cd or Ni-MH batteries. If the cordless drill is no longer charging or holding a charge, it may be time to replace the batteries.



Instructions:

Remove the cordless drill from the charging station. Turn the drill off.



* 2



Remove the battery pack. The battery pack is located on the bottom of a cordless drill and can be loosened by pressing two tabs, one on each side of the drill. Once loosened, pull the battery pack downward to remove it.



* 3



Remove the drill battery cap. It usually just slides off, but it may be held in place with a small screw, depending on the cordless drill manufacture. If there is a screw, use a small Phillips-head screwdriver to unscrew the screw and then slide off.



* 4 Remove the old batteries. Place the new cordless drill batteries into place.



* 5 Place the battery cap back over the batteries. If needed, screw the screw back into place.



* 6 Slide the battery pack back into place on the bottom of the cordless drill. You should hear a snap or pop when the battery pack is firmly in place. Allow the new batteries to charge for at least 24 hours before use.
