Quick Review Toshiba Portege Z830 Laptop

laptop 11-15-2011Thick and heavy laptop computers are waning in popularity, now people want their laptops to be as mobile as their lives are. Being stuck at wall outlets charging a laptop or needing a bulky dedicated laptop bag isn’t all that attractive anymore. The good news is that the computer industry has realized this and is reacting by producing laptop computers that are very thin and light with adequate battery life.

Intel really got the ball rolling with the initiative early this year when they released their Intel Sandy Bridge mobile processors with new Intel HD Graphics 3000 integrated GPUs. The new class of Intel chips and graphics were finally good enough in performance and power conservation, making the job of laptop makers like Apple and Samsung much easier. Intel continued their efforts to bring a full troop of capable thin and light laptop computers by introducing the Ultrabook category at Computex in the middle of the year.

Intel Ultrabook DefinedShortly after Intel defined the Ultrabook all the major PC vendors that had shied away from the premium ultra-portable market started to show-off designs for machines they would release later in the year. Acer, Asus, Lenovo, and Toshiba have all launched Ultrabook class laptop computers that feature Intel Sandy Bridge processors and thin-and-light chassis.

Toshiba has their 2.47 lbs. (starting weight) Portege Z830 seriesof 13.3-inch laptops. The new Toshiba Portege Z830 series includes two expensive Intel Core i5 and i7 powered Z830 models and less expensive Intel Core i3 powered Z835 models. Across the range the same design is consistent, only the internal hardware is changed.

Here are the four available configurations and prices (note that the Portege Z830-BT8300 is the only model that is customizable through batteryfast, the other three models are pre-built and offer no flexibility for internal hardware):

The Toshiba Portege Z830 series laptops also include USB 3.0, HDMI and VGA ports; support for 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi, LAN, Bluetooth, and Intel Wireless Display wireless technologies; a special ‘honeycomb rib structure’ in their magnesium alloy chassis; backlit and spill-resistant keyboard; 8-cell 47Wh laptop batteries rated at up to 8 hours of continuous Toshiba PA3534U-1BRS Battery life; Microsoft Windows 7 operating system.

So, Toshiba says the Toshiba Portege Z830 series laptops weight only 2.47 lbs., but really how light is that?

Compared to the popular 13.3-inch Apple Macbook Air the Toshiba laptops are about 18% lighter. How about some popular Windows 7 powered thin-and-light 13.3-inch notebooks? The Samsung Series 9 that got a lot of buzz earlier this year is 15% heavier than the Toshiba counterpart, and even the recent Asus Zenbook UX31 Ultrabook is heavier than the Toshiba laptops by about 14%.

I’d go on with comparisons, but you get the point. The Toshiba Portege Z830 series features the lightest 13.3-inch notebooks on the market.
