Laptop Battery Care Tips and Facts
Normally a laptop battery can run up to 2 hours, but more often it run less than that. After sometime, we notice the batteryrunning shorter and shorter where we need more often to charge it. No matter how good is the manufacturer, battery degradation will happen overtime. But the good news is, battery degradation can be minimize by know few facts and tips on laptop battery.
For any new laptop, the battery usually comes empty. It's advisable to charge at least 4 hours non-stop on the first charging as it can prolong the lifespan of the battery. Also during the first charging, it is not advisable to use the laptop battery at all.
There are generally 2 types of battery. Knowing the different is important because it affect how we should charge the battery. The older type is call Nickel Cadmium battery. For this kind of battery, it's advisable to use the battery until empty, and then charge it to full. This is a one full cycle. As for another type of battery, which is Lithium based battery, it's advisable to use the battery until 10%-20% before you charge it to full. On Windows base, you will get alert that battery is running low and you should start charging it.

So far we have cover how to charge the Acer extensa 5220 battery effectively, but how about effective usage of laptop battery. On Windows base, it's recommended to use the Power Schemes for Laptop to control how the laptop behaves after a period of inactivity. Example, when running on battery, after 5 minutes, it will turn off monitor. After 10 minutes, it will turn off harddisk. After 20 minutes, the laptop will go into standby mode. This can greatly reduce the drainage on thelaptop battery pack.
Second way to reduce battery usage is to lower/darken the laptop monitor brightness. Brighter screen consumes more power compare to darker screen. Thirdly, when running on battery, try to minimize the number of active applications running at the same time. Each application consumes processing power, so more processing will use more power from the battery. Lastly when laptop is not in used, set the laptop to standby/hibernate mode. This can be done by pressing the 'power' button once or just close the laptop lid.

Another last tip on reducing battery power usage is to avoid using external devices like external harddisk, external DVD writer and iPod. These devices does not have its own power supply, therefore it will drain the power directly from the laptop battery. If you really want long runtime on laptop that running on battery, you should consider getting a 9 cell battery. On down side, it will be bigger and add extra weight to the laptop, but on the good side, it can last for up to 4 hour runtime.
By knowing these facts and tips, you should be able to prolong the laptop battery lifetime and also maximize your runtime when running on battery.
