Unpacking any new Apple product is always a joy, and even with its minimalist eco-friendly packaging the new 11-inch MacBook Air is no exception.

The real competition comes, ironically enough, from Apple themselves.

Although the Air is an astoundingly powerful machine for its size, the limited size of the screen means it will probably only be used by most buyers for word processing on the move, email, social networking and web browsing.
All tasks that an iPad teamed with a portable keyboard could do with equal elegance, and a markedly lower price tag.
The iPad, too, can conceal a mini 3G SIM card within its body. There are two USB ports on the Air, but one of them is so close to the Magsafe power connector that larger USB devices, such as 3G dongles, won’t fit into the Air’s left-hand USB port if the machine’s running off the mains. By no means a major problem but equally, not ideal.
That’s a limitation dictated by space-saving, as is the use of an internal battery.
Because battery life on the machine is so impressive – often exceeding the advertised 5 hours, carrying a spare battery is not such a necessity.
However, once you have got used to the LED battery charge ‘ladder’ on older Mac laptops, it seems a backward step to have to switch the machine on to check how much battery
is left.
Space savings, too, dictate a more compact keyboard than you might be used to.
It’s still perfectly big enough to type on, but the Air’s unlikely to be your only computer and adjusting for the size difference between the two can lead annoying errors such as to Caps Lock being engaged when you were typing an ‘a’, or vice versa.
Much of the new MacBook Air’s incredible power will probably go untapped by most users. Its elegance can be rivalled by Apple’s own tablet and for the better part of £1,000 potential buyers would have myriad other choices.
I still want one more than words can say.

The when auto-brightness is turned on, the sensor will automatically adjust the brightness of the screen based on how much light is nearby. 3. Keep WiFi Off
Unlike the iPhone, the iPod touch can only connect to the Internet when there’s an open WiFi hotspot nearby. 5. Turn Data Push Off
The iPod touch can be set to automatically suck email and other data down to it or, for some kinds of accounts, have the data pushed out to it whenever new data becomes available. Of course, both features require the iPod to be connected to a network via WiFi, something we’ve already established drains battery on its own. When you add this second feature, you’re draining even more power. So, unless you’re waiting for a super-crucial email, turn push off to extend your battery’s life (though with push off, you’ll need to set your email to check automatically or do it yourself).
6. Fetch Email Less Often
The less your iPod touch accesses a WiFi network, the less battery it uses. So, set it to check your email accounts less often. Try checking every hour or, if you’re really serious about saving battery, manually. Manual checks means you’ll never just have email waiting for you, but you’ll also stave off the red battery icon.

7. Auto-Lock Sooner

When you get right down to it, laptops only consist of a few key parts as far as user interface is concerned. Keyboard, screen, speakers–and, of course, the touch pad. With multitouch tablets and smartphones changing the interface landscape drastically, it’s quickly becoming a multitouch world, and computers are the devices playing catch-up. Synaptics, makers of most multitouch touch pads used today, have a next-generation clickpad in development that hopes to close the gap quickly. Called the Series 3.0 Clickpad, it’s a wider, button-free click surface that’s the successor to clickpads seen in some current Windows laptops.
When it’s all boiled down, the ClickPad Series 3.0 offers several significant improvements:

• More accurate finger recognition. The 3.0 Clickpad has 10-finger independent recognition on its capacitive surface, something more akin to what devices like the iPad have. Synaptics’ image-sensing technology on the touch pad also is far more accurate at locating the shape of the finger being used, and whether it’s a flat surface or something resembling a palm. This allows an override of the touch technology when a palm is accidentally placed on the surface when typing.
• Multifinger gestures. Apple’s clickpad has had this for years, but the new Clickpad allows up to four-finger gestures and a wide variety of gestures to clear the desktop, browse back and forth between Web pages, and more accurately pinch-to-zoom and rotate. Four-finger swiping brings up a clever “deck” of open windows, which can be easily navigated between.

• Clicking anywhere. Current clickpads work like a giant lever, angling downwards from a hinge on the back. Apple’s clickpads don’t click well at the back end, and neither do equivalent Windows clickpads. Synaptics’ next-gen model is a large surface that can click down at any part of the pad. Sometimes the concept model felt a little loose, but in future pads it’ll be nice to engage in some top-clicking.
• Scrybe. Synaptics is working on a gesture-based vocabulary for other clickpad-initiated controls. Some may involve drawing a question mark to begin a search, for instance. We welcome more features, but a gesture vocabulary will need cross-application support and could get confusing to master. We’re reminded of Graffiti for the Palm Pilot; hopefully, it won’t be as confusing.

The idea therefore of jamming a lower-case vowel against the word Mac, Book, Pod, Pad or Phone was certainly a rum one. As stated above, Apple used to be Head Boy in the education IT sector, so a range of spin-off products made a lot of sense.
The original idea was for the eMac to be available only to the education market, but it was quickly released to the general public a month after its launch in April 2002 – although it went education-only again in 2005 in order to push non-scholars towards the pricier iMac.
It would have been fun if the ‘e’ handle had got some traction. Perhaps we’d have had an ePhone or ePad, and maybe even eLife school software. But it wasn’t to be. Apple CEO Steve Jobs prefers minimal product lines not voluminous lists of confusingly similar devices.
