1. A few quick and easy changes to your notebook's settings and setup can help to prolong the laptop battery life. Lower the brightness of your screen as much as is comfortable. Default settings are often much brighter than necessary. Alter the computer's settings to automatically dim the screen when the notebook is unplugged. Most notebooks have automatic settings that will adjust the notebook's power usage when it is unplugged. Those that do not do this automatically can be set to by using the Power Options utility in the Control Panel menu.

2. Adding more memory or ram to your computer can ultimately help prolong your battery life. By default, Windows uses virtual memory to handle files temporarily. Additional memory or ram can reduce the computer's need to use virtual memory, thereby using less battery power in day-to-day operations. Notebooks running off battery power should also be disconnected from unnecessary USB devices to reserve power as much as possible.

3. Keep the battery clean for the best performance. The metal connect points on both the battery and notebook should be clean and touching properly. The laptop batteries should be charged as often as possible. If your notebook has an ion lithium battery, allowing the battery to die completely may damage its ability to reach full charge in the future. Older nickel-metal hydrate batteries may need to be fully drained before recharging to reach their maximum capacity.
