In New Year Notebooks Say Goodbye to Power-cords by adapterlist.com

adapterlist.com – In New Year Notebooks Say Goodbye to Power-cords

The year 2011 is likely to go down in the history of mobile computing as the one that finally set the laptop free from the mains outlet.

While all-day battery life has so far been the exclusive preserve of very expensive laptops or very low-powered netbooks, a little revolution in Sunnyvale, California, has brought the technology right down to the entry level.

“In one major step, users can experience… personal supercomputing capabilities in notebooks that can deliver all-day battery life,” said Rick Bergman, senior vice-president and general manager of the number two PC chip-maker, the California-based AMD.

It’s been all of four years, and multiple trials and errors, in the making, but the company and its partners on Wednesday announced fully powered mainstream notebooks with 11 hours of battery life. In comparison, most regular notebooks come with around four hours of battery life at present.

HP was the first off-the-ground, with a $450 (Rs20,700) laptop that not only has a mainstream-class dual core processor, but also lasts 10 hours on a single charge. In addition, it has a built-in graphics processor that will let users watch high-definition YouTube videos — something most mainstream laptops literally stutter at.

Similar models were announced by Lenovo and Toshiba, albeit with fewer details.

The secret sauce is Fusion, the new line of chips unveiled by AMD on Wednesday, and its power lies in its power consumption numbers. A mainstream processor — like the Intel Core i370 — can suck up as much 35 watts of power, while a mainstream graphics card — required to view high-definition video and games — eats up another 15-20 watts, taking the total to 50-55W.

In comparison, AMD’s new chips for mainstream notebooks consume just 18W — including the built-in graphics processor. Another chip, aimed at thin notebooks, consumes just 9W at peak, including a built-in graphics core.

Despite AMD’s claim that the new architechture, with graphics processor helping out the main processor in crunch time, is nothing short of the biggest revolution after the invention of the PC (x86) standard, industry veterans feel the company has an uphill struggle.

“We have always supported AMD,” pointed out an HP official who wished to remain anonymous, “but it is really bad at marketing.”

Despite solid backing from HP — the result of a tiff between HP and Intel — AMD’s market share has slid from around 10% in notebooks three years ago to almost negligible levels now.

With AMD focusing all its energies on preparing the new architecture for the last two years, the HP official believes Intel has built up a solid lead that will act as a strong entry barrier to the new products.

As a result, AMD’s notebooks, despite being as powerful as mainstream ones, are likely to attract cost-conscious customers who are particular about battery life, the official said.

Meanwhile, Intel is all set to announce its 2010 chip lineup on Thursday.
