The latest version of Apple’s operating system, iOS 4.2, is helping to boost the life of iPhone, iPad and MacBook Air l batteries
by supporting technology that reduces the scale of the network connections it needs to make to carry out basic functions.
Nokia Siemens Networks (NSN) has noted the development, having incorporated what it refers to as a ‘controlled fast dormancy’ solution into its network technology and into various Nokia smartphones that are already being used around the world.
Explaining how it all works, NSN described the technology as enabling smartphones and networks to communicate with one another in a less energy-intensive way, essentially by doing so more quickly and with less signalling involved.
Even a process as straightforward as reading emails or gathering tweets has a handset signalling to the network all the while, which drains the device’s battery and congests the network, but controlled fast dormancy apparently creates a more efficient scenario.
“The new Apple software release supports this way of working on networks that have the technology implemented. Nokia also implemented the technology in its smartphones earlier this year,” an official NSN blog explained.
“So now the two handset makers that account for half of all new smartphones in the world contribute to an improved user experience and cost reduction for operators.”

Highlighting the potential usefulness of the system, NSN pointed to one of its operators that claimed smartphone battery lives have been increased from six to 11 hours as a result of its recent implementation.
Apple’s iOS 4.2 was made available for iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch users worldwide on November 22nd and the company’s CEO Steve Jobs described the up-date as effectively turning the iPad into a “completely new product”.
