So the 9.5″ Apple iPad has been taking the tablet world by storm lately and the 3G enabled, Wi-Fi only tablet is quite a hot ticket with gadget seekers, but what if you don’t want, or cannot afford an iPad?  Let’s take a look at other tablets on the market that might be something to consider if you are looking for a new toy.

You can get the Apple iPad for a cool $499 and that is for the entry level 16GB version of the tablet.  There are larger capacity models, but those aren’t as hot as the smaller ones.  The Wi-Fi only tablet does NOT have a camera, so the popular app, FaceTime, is not any option for this tablet.  For those using the app on an iPhon or iPod Touch, this is somewhat of a downfall.  One of the other “bad” things is that even if you purchased one of these bad boys the week it was launched, you can count on Apple releasing another, upgraded version within 12 months.



The Galaxy Tab is another tablet that might tickle your fancy for a new device.  Samsung has followed in Apples footsteps and created a tablet that is a bit smaller and based on the Android operating system.  The issue with the Tab is the price isn’t smaller just because it appears that way.  You can only get the device 3G ready for major carriers and even with a 2 year agreement, that is only getting the price down to about $400.



The Tab does have two cameras, a flash enabled browser and Android Market access.  For those that are all about everything against Apple this tablet is a perfect fit.

There is also an option from Barnes and Noble with the NookColor.  Obviously, not a top of the line tablet, but it’s actually being marketed as an e-reader, so don’t fret, it does that at least.  The NookColor is about $250 and can also be used to surf the web although one reported flaw is that it pauses to focus when zooming and scrolling.



Because the NookColor is much simpler than the iPad or the Tab, that just means it is much easier to use.  It’s only about half the price of the iPad and is a good “starter” tablet if your in the market.  One setback is the USB cable that apparently was only created for the NookColor, so it cannot be used with other devices making it just another cable you have to carry around.



Let’s not forget about the first tablet type device, Amazon’s Kindle.  Of course, this is really only for reading ebooks, although some advertise the ability to surf the web.  The “e-ink” is not for displaying websites on tablet screen.  I always go back to asking the same question, if you own a laptop or desktop computer, what good is a tablet computer that is more than an e-reader?
