Looking for a tablet that’s not an iPad? Then try one of these…

The BlackBerry PlayBook is one of many alternatives to the iPad

Apple hasn’t just rekindled interest in tablet devices, it has created the kind of hysteria that only Apple can.

There’s no denying that the iPad is a beautifully crafted device that’s a joy to use, but not everyone wants to buy into Apple’s design and marketing hype.

  • Apple iPad review

With that in mind, we’ve rounded up ten alternatives to the iPad and put them in descending order to prove that Apples are not the only fruit.

10. Amazon Kindle

Okay, so the Amazon Kindle isn’t a true competitor to a fully featured tablet device like the iPad, but it really comes down to what you’re looking for. Apple has made a big deal of the e-book reader functionality of the iPad, and if that’s your primary reason for wanting one, you really should consider Amazon’s latest Kindle.

The biggest improvement in the latest 3rd generation Kindle is that it’s officially available in the UK, complete with a UK Kindle store to back it up. Add to that the fact that the entry level model, with Wi-Fi connectivity, costs only £109 – that’s almost impulse purchase money! Even the version with Wi-Fi and 3G data will only set you back £149, making it a very affordable alternative to a fully featured tablet.

With 4GB of built-in storage, the Kindle can store around 3,500 books, while its battery life of around one month, puts the iPads ten hours into stark perspective. Of course it’s the passive nature of e-ink that allows such amazing battery life – once the page is rendered, no power is necessary to keep it there. It’s also far easier on the eye to read e-ink than it is to read an LCD display. The trade off is that the screen is greyscale and static.

So, if the main reason you’re attracted to the iPad is e-book functionality, have a long hard look at the new Kindle before parting with any cash.

9. HP Slate

Despite some high profile exposure at CES last January, the HP Slate never quite made it to the finish line. A few months ago everyone, including us, thought that the Slate would be the major competitor to the iPad, but then rumours that HP was killing the device flooded the web.

The original specs for the Slate included an Intel Atom CPU, 1GB of RAM and up to 64GB of flash based storage. However, it was the choice of Windows 7 as the operating system that seemed to be the contentious issue, with many wondering whether the user interface experience could even come close to that offered by the iPad.

Then HP bought Palm, along with the WebOS platform, and rumours flooded the Internet about a WebOS enabled tablet device to supersede the Slate. However, there’s still a chance that the Slate could see the light of day. With a WebOS enabled tablet to compete directly with the iPad, a Windows based tablet could make a viable case for itself in the corporate market.

Although the Slate was originally pitched as a consumer device, competing with the iPad, its Windows 7 functionality would make it far easier to implement into a corporate IT structure. This would allow corporate users to enjoy the tablet experience, while not having to lose the functionality offered by a traditional notebook.

Only time will tell whether HP still intends to launch the Slate, or any Windows based tablet for that matter, but with WebOS serving the consumer sector, it would definitely make a good case for itself.

8. Dell 7-inch Tablet

The Dell Streak is already established and finds itself placed further up this list. However, last month Michael Dell showed off a 7-inch tablet device, which will also use Android for its user interface.

Solid details are pretty sparse on the new device, but rumours suggest that it is very close to production ready. What the move does suggest though, is that the Streak’s 5-inch screen may be thought to be too small for some prospective tablet buyers. By offering a 7-inch device, Dell is pitching its new baby in the same size category as the Samsung Galaxy Tab.

Rest assured that as soon as solid details and specs for this new device emerge, we’ll report them. But given Dell’s proven track record, we’re expecting the company’s 7-inch tablet to be an impressive piece of kit.

7. Viewsonic ViewPad

Viewsonic showed off its ViewPad 7-inch tablet device at IFA last month. The ViewPad 7 runs the latest Froyo 2.2 version of Android, and is driven by a Qualcomm Snapdragon processor running at 600MHz.

The screen is a capacitive, multi-touch affair, so you’ll be able to swipe and pinch your way around. Connectivity comes from built-in Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS and 3G data, although the latter will, of course require a data contract. There are also both front and rear facing cameras, putting video calling on the menu.

With a projected price of £350, many may not see it as cheap enough compared to an entry leveliPad, but it’s worth remembering that 3G enabled iPads start at £529, making the ViewPad 7 almost £200 cheaper.

6. Archos70 Internet Tablet

Archos 7 4 420 100 Worlds Top 10 best tablet PC iPad alternatives

Archos launched a new batch of tablet devices last month, and it looks like its latest efforts are the best yet. Most importantly, Archos has finally dumped its resistive screen technology and jumped on the capacitive bandwagon, complete with multi-touch support.

The Archos 70 Internet Tablet is a 7-inch device, which seems to be the most popular form factor at the moment. Weighing only 300g and being only 10mm thick, the Archos 70 is far more portable than the iPad, and even most other 7-inch rivals.

There are two versions of the Archos 70 available. The first version has 8GB of flash storage and a microSD card slot for expanding on that. The second version has a 250GB hard disk, allowing for copious amounts of video, audio and pictures. The down side of the HDD version is an extra 4mm of thickness and an extra 100g of weight.

The Archos 70 comes equipped with the latest Froyo 2.2 build of Android, but like previous Archos products, it won’t be able to access the Android Market for apps, instead having to make do with Archos’ AppsLib. There’s built-in Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and GPS, but no support for 3G data.
