A team of scientists from Harvard University reckon they’ve made a considerable breakthrough in the effort to make the batteries in smartphone and laptop devices last much longer than they currently do.



Overcoming the issue of chemical instability in fuel cell batteries has been a major hurdle for researchers in the area but Harvard’s scientists reckon they’re very much on the right track with all-ceramic electrodes and the use of methane.



Keeping a fuel-cell battery from overheating or becoming dangerously unstable has so far been beyond the capabilities of scientists but many are still working on the subject in the knowledge that longer battery lives make for better consumer electronics.

“If you can realise high-performance solid-oxide fuel cells that operate in the 300C range, you can use them in transportation vehicles and portable electronics, and with different types of fuels,” explained Shriram Ramanathan, leader of the latest work being done in this area at Harvard.



“Low temperature, around the 300C sweet spot, is a holy grail in this field,” he made clear.
